It all started with a strike, and then another, and then another, and then another.... But we only needed the 3.
The manager of Elephant and Castle super bowl approached CEO (Bertie) and Head of Partnerships (Andy) to congratulate them on their win. A TURKEY FOR A TURKEY!
A thus, the first (and potentially last unless bowling luck continuous) Turkey day at Flubit.
Turkey sandwiches, cooked overnight, and prepared by the two winners for the entire office.
A tasty day... and we finally had a use for the First Aid Kit's surgical gloves... #FoodStandards
After a year of fantastic numbers, hard work, and loads of fun - we wanted to make sure we saw off the very busy Christmas season in style.
For the Flubit Xmas party in 2016 we headed down to central London for a party like none other.
Fire Dancers, Acrobats, Circus performers... all in between a luxurious 3 course meal.
Unlimited soft drink, beer and wine kept us going through the night, which ended with a all-night disco and casino tables.
Thanks team for a wonderful year of work and dedication to transforming eCommerce!
Ever since we acquired (for free) a Pool and Table Tennis table from an upstairs office who were clearly lacking some fun, we have had inter-company tournaments.
Every year they have grown in size and stature, and over the years we've added more and more sports.
This Christmas we introduced a brand new, sweat-busting sport, CHESS!
Congratulations to our Festive Tournament winners:
- Chess: Cosmin!
- Fifa2017: Alex!
- Pool: Bertie (co-founder)
- TableTennis: Mosh!
- Darts: Billy!
Unlucky loser Andy, who lost in two finals (Chess and Darts) - but as he's continually won tournaments for the last 5 years... it was almost nice of him to allow someone else to take home silverware.
Introduced new for this year, Darrell, who leads our customer service team, decided to bring an Roadside vs. Riverside (our two offices) Pictionary tournament.
Throughout the year we've played two grand matches, and it's currently 1-1. So just before the Xmas break, we needed to find a true winner.
In full festive cheer, all pictures were Winter themed. Fights broke out, pens flew... and I can't quite remember who eneded up being the winner...
I think Riverside...? We'll go with Riverside. Congratulations Riverside.
For some reason, the day after the Xmas party, some team members look a little more tired than usual.
Despite an impressive data team here at Flubit, we haven't fully worked out why this is...
Never-the-less, to help resolve people's difficulties in getting up the next morning, we allow you to forgo the need to dress.
The most impressive night-sleeper is pictured here. Our customer service lead, Darrell, in all PJ glory!
There's nothing quite like the festive season without a bit of Secret Santa.
With a team of 50+, the gifts just keep on giving, and this year Carla (Head of Finance) became Santa and distributed 'gifts a many' out to the team.
Some of our favourites (pictured here) consisted of a full tea set for tea loving Steph, a Chelsea mug in an Arsenal mug wrapper (Cornel is an Arsenal fan), a pink umbrella for Santa herself, and a wonderful personalised apron for our co-founder Adel.
Well done Secret Santas! Xmas was sorted
The Flubit team are a caring bunch. Every year we do a couple of charitable activities, and I'm always amazed how much we raise... and how much fun we have.
In a year where we've had 3 new mummies and 2 new daddies we decided to help save some children by wearing Christmas jumpers and being festive.
The team came to work in full festivity, laden with £ coins (and the ability to text-in) and here's some of what occurred:
- Bertie (CEO) tried but failed to make pancakes - despite an incredibly elaborate set up.
- A "round the world" table tennis match took place, with our newest member of the team (Gabs) being victorious. (£1 entry of course)
- Steph (COO) made healthy popcorn (no oil) and Christmas Tea.
- The Marketing team arranged (and eventually won the main prize...) a raffle for everyone to enjoy
- Michaela (Marketing) wrapped people's Christmas presents over lunch!
Overall we raised over £250, placing us in the top 2% of al money raised from companies in the UK (at least from what we can see!).
YAY! Go us!
p.s - Oh and to top it off, we even had one of our new babies join us! She won 3 prizes in the raffle too!
We love a tournament here at Flubit & SKU Cloud. This Xmas we're running internal FIFA, Table Tennis, Pool, Chess and Darts competitions.
But this festive season, with the help of our entire building (and the landlord!) we took part in something a little bigger.
In November and December 2016 the inaugural Met Wharf Foosball tournament took place! In total 24 teams, 48 players (it was doubles) battled it out over 4 weeks to find out exactly who was the best table football company in the land... (the land being Met Wharf (where we work)).
Sadly, despite organising the tournament, all Flubit & SKU Cloud teams exited in either the group stages, or the first round of the knockout stage... but we kept our support strong, and witnessed an action packed final!
The Pub Team (made up of Louise and Sandra (also representing the landlord)) took on Joe & Ermi from Victoria Steamship.
J&E took an early lead of 6-1 before a decisive fight back from The Pub Team made it 8-6. But the dream comeback was not to be, with Ermi smashing in the winning goal with 3 minutes to spare... you can see that moment in the photos.
So congratulations to Joe & Ermi from Victoria Steamship for becoming the first winners of the Met Wharf Foosball tournament.
See you in 2017?
We love to be a little festive.
This year at our weekly demo day (where one member of the team gets to talk about what they've been up to recently, and everyone else listens/eats/drinks)... we took an extra hour out the day to decorate the office with all things festive.
Fake snow on the logo, ballballs for earrings and tinsle delight, the office was made into a festive treat!
After 60 minutes we'd exhausted the loop of Xmas music and it was time to get back to work, it turns out December is a busy time for us.
BUT, every morning when we come into work we have a chocolate to eat, thanks some very merry advent calanders on everyones desk.. or wall.
We get lots of great PR here at Flubit / SKU Cloud.. such as The Sun telling their users about Flubit being the best place to buy computer games, Small Business Magazine warning their users about the dangers of 'drunk online shopping', or The Mirror working with us to educate the UK about Xmas shopping cut off dates...
But there's some we really like to shout out about, such as this one. In December 2016 & Jan 2017 if you flew British Airways, you and millions of others will have sat next to our COO, Steph Fiala.
Featured inside every onboard magazine, Steph joins your festive period flight to give you an insight into the challenges of running a growing tech company.
It's a fantastic article, feature and photo!
You can read the article here (hosted by BA - sorry if you're in the future and the link doesn't work)
Here at Flubit we have a really strong connection with Europe's (and maybe now the world's) biggest and best technology conference - Web Summit.
We've attended for the last 5 years, and in 2013 we were victorious in winning the prestigious Pitch competition. It was a major event in our Company history.
This year 7 of us attended Lisbon, the first year the Web Summit moved away from Dublin.
The 2016 Web Summit was incredible. It was much bigger than it had ever been before; this allowed the organisers to arrange 20+ different speaking stages across a range of topics (including, Data, Sports, Food, Tech, VR, Gaming, Saas, Startups...). If you were interested in a particular area, you could simply pitch up at one of the stages and watch the top people in your field speak all day long.
In addition to the above, there was my (Bertie, founder) favourite part - the 1000s of fledgling (yet amazing) Start Ups about to conquer the world. If you want a 101 of the future tech companies you'll be using - Web Summit is the place to be.
Lisbon is also an incredible and beautiful city, and late into the night you were able to meet and network with the 50,000+ people attending the event.
If you didn't make it to 2016 Web Summit- i strongly recommend you make it to 2017 if you can.
Halloween at Flubit is always a team favourite.
Every year, we eat fake-gross stuff (which is actually really tasty), and try to play a spooky themed game or two.
Last year we played 'who can make the best paper bat-o-plane' and this year Darrell (our Customer Service Team Leader) organised Flubit's 2nd pictionary match (here's a link to the first). Of course it was ghostly themed, and unlike the first match, this time Roadside walked away with the spoils... I guess that only leaves a 3rd and final decider at Xmas then?
What made it cooler is that we stole our Head of Finances ipad and linked it up to the projector, for a digital version of the game.
In addition, Darrell also was our demo presenter today and he gave us a Halloween special - Customer Service horror stories. Now, make no mistake, we LOVE our customers at Flubit - but sometimes (very, very rarely, they can make life a little vampire-y for us...) - Darrell gave us a small handful accounts over the last year, where we've had our work cut out for us!
Hello - it's Bertie here, a co-founder of Flubit, and i'm a little lost for words.
I started Flubit when I was 24, and back then I had no idea what we'd become. True, I had a vision of what I wanted Flubit (and now SKUcloud.co.uk) to be - but in the world of tech companies, what you want isn't always what you get.
On October 19th however, I turned 30, and I realised that despite all our successes in eCommerce, triumph in new technology, and great performance from Operations - we had achieved something far more awesome... a really incredible team.
As you'll see from the Flubit Life website, building a great team is on the top of my priority list..
...and my 30th showed how great they are:
A surprise party, complete with cake, drinks, branded stuff, A MAGICIAN, presents and more.
Thank you team - that was simply awesome!
Today we did something MASSIVE at Flubit Limited, we launched SKUcloud.co.uk - and we had a party to celebrate!
Inviting our investors, advisors and team members, for a few hours on a Thursday evening in October 2016, the team ate cake, drank (thanks to unlimited free Gin and Tonics) and enjoyed learning about SKUCloud.co.uk
At its launch, SKU Cloud is Europe’s largest marketplace ecosystem; offering an automated platform that helps Seller Partners and Destination Partners sell popular retail products, at market competitive prices.
SKU Cloud enables Seller Partners (people with warehouses) to get the most out of their business, helping them to reach millions of new customers, sell more of their products and drive more revenue.
For Destination Partners (companies with popular websites or apps), SKU Cloud allows them to sell any of 50+ million retail products directly on their website, including 50k best sellers for prices cheaper than amazon.co.uk. Offering businesses a white-labelled, fully managed ecommerce proposition, into their existing website – alongside the ability to learn from five years worth of marketplace data and access insight into the industry.
With an aim to create an efficient and fairer economy for everyone, SKU Cloud is revolutionising the way that over 1,500 online businesses are doing e-commerce.
In launching, SKUcloud.co.uk also replaced our previous brands of WeFlubit.com and BeFlubit.com.
The team at Flubit and SKU Cloud are eCommerce experts. We love what we do, and many of us love to share the learnings we gain with the rest of the world.
Every week internally someone from the team has a chance to chat (to the rest of the team) about something they are working on - it's a way of allowing people to improve their public speaking skills.
Working with our communication team we also get out and about to share our wisdom. Recently Steph (COO) has been chatting to Goldsmith University about Women in Tech, Andy (Head of Partnerships) has been talking along side the CEO of CitySprint at 'The Future of eCommerce Delivery' conference, and Lydia has been educating MA PR students on SEO and social media at the University of Greenwich.
If you've been to one of our talks, then feel free to drop us a line to see if there's space to work with us too.
There's nothing we like more at Flubit than cake, especially if that cake is home made.
So when we had the chance to raise money on September 30th 2016 for the MacMillion Bake Sale, we jumped at the opportunity. And how amazing it was!!
This year we raised £617 - which was almost £100 more than the year before, such an awesome achievement by the team.
In addition we had 17 home-baked goods, and about 15 store bought loveliness. We were also joined by Linda from Share Radio who did this amazing piece about us.
In the photos you can also see Bertie (Founder) making his banana cake, and new Flubit Mum Isaura tempting her little one with sugar!
What a yummy day!
It's not every day you get featured in one of the UK's most prestigious tech awards, but when you do, you should shout about it.
In September 2016 Flubit were featured as 'Ones to Watch' in the Sunday Times - which, as you could guess, we agreed with! The process of this award was spread across the entire year, with meetings back and forth, so it was great to finally get the nod!
Even better, (well at least for the short-term tastebuds), BDO, a sponsor of the event sent us a congratulatory cake. Nothing says success like the sweet taste of cake.
Apparently there are over 1,200 "National Days" a year. It's fair to say we don't acknowledge most of them. Maybe they should give a few more bank holidays?
But one national day always touches our heart. And that's #NationalTeddyBearDay. The office Teddy bear has a heart-breaking story...
There was a wonderful Children's Model agency.
Every day children would cuddle and love BigTed, because he was big, and because he was cuddly.
But then the photos stopped, so the loving stopped.
BigTed was left in a dark room, alone.
Then Flubit arrived in the next door offices, and BigTed was found.
BigTed became part of the family, and now has his very own Flubit T-shirt too.
So here's to BigTed, and all those other Bears that keep children and adults happy!
3-4 times a year, Flubit staff head out of the offices and get involved in a specially organised day activity that we like to call a Flubit day.
In summer 2016, it was time for the Flubilympics.
Every Flubilympian would represent their respective departments in a fearsome competition involving bouncing sausages, penguin suits and inflatable castles.
As dangerous as it sounds, everyone was psyched to get competing and try collect as many points in each of the events to take gold for their respective departments.
Congratulations to… The black team (sales, partnerships and Infrastructure), lead by Abby… who won the day and had the pleasure of awarding first place to Jamal’s Green team!
by Ernie - read more about the day out on our blog.
When you pass probation, here at Flubit you get a very special piece of clothing, a Flubit hoodie.
However for some reason we've never had t-shirts, well that all changed in August 2016.
After a talk about the vision from our co-founder and CEO (Bertie), we were presented with our brand new Flubit t-shirts... but that wasn't all!
In the speech Bertie announced that we'd be launching a new business brand of the company 'SKU Cloud', launching in September 2016.
We may have waited 5 years for a Flubit t-shirt, but it took -1 months to get our hands on a SKU cloud t-shirt.
Food is the way to a team's heart.
In August 2016, the second annual Flubit BBQ fed the team in the beuaitful grounds of Devenport Hotel, Greenwich.
With the team sporting their new Flubit and SKU Cloud t-shirts, unlimited portions of Salad, Burgers, Veggie sausages and puddings were gobbled up.
Why not join us for the next annual BBQ for 2017?
Normally, it's not OK to hit a team member.
But when it's in the spirit of getting fit, sometimes that can totally cool!
Our Customer Service Team Leader, Darrell, has a knack of getting people off their chairs and up on their feet. Darrell is our current in-house Mr. Motivator, having organised runs, fitness sessions and now boxing too.
Every Tuesday in the Summer there's a "Get Fit @ Flubit" session going on somewhere in the park near by, on the tranquil basin, or, as last Tuesday showed, simply on the river-side decking outside the offices.
Here it was totally cool to strike a team member, assuming they were also taking part in the core activity...
Come join Flubit, join a session, organise a session, be part of a great team.
So today something happened in the office...
Two Red Bull team members, complete with Red Bull rucksacks, decided to invade our offices!!
It turns out however that it was a pretty positive invasion, everyone was handed free cans of Red Bull! Cheers RedBull!
There was a catch however... aparantly this was all part of the campaign to make people go home from work at 4pm tomorrow by Red Bull - "BE OUT THE DOOR BY FOUR", organised by a double-agent in the office!
The great news is, you can get out the door every day at Flubit, just by using your flexi-hours!
Time flies when you're having fun... that short, well-known pithy saying, stating a general truth about how humans perceive the world.
The weekend of 24th July 2016 marks 300 weeks since the Flubit journey began, and it it fits the proverb above perfectly.
During that time I (Bertie, co-founder) have recorded over 350 video diaries to remember the ups and downs so far. Looking back on a handful today, it's fascinating to see how quickly the Flubit team have built the 2nd largest marketplace in the UK for products (over 50m!!), and one of the world's most advanced eCommerce technologies.
Among many achievements, the team have helped create over 175 jobs in the UK, saved shoppers £millions, and enabled 1,500+ UK & European companies to prosper by sending revenue their way.
It may have all started inside a walk-in wardrobe, but now you can find a Flubit order sat in the home of almost every village, town & city in the UK, and the platform is accessed over 500 times a second, every hour, of every day. All those stats are pretty cool!
With my co-founder Adel, sometimes it's good to be proud of the past, as much as we are cautious about the future. All who are part of the team right now, in the past, or those who have been on this journey from the near very beginning and are still here today, should feel that immense feeling of pride today. Oh, and of course all our amazing investors who have made this possible, they are scarily supportive!
Just for the vain fun of it, the first is an image from the first ever video diary, made up of stills from all the others.
Then the next 5 images have been selected for:
1. Most Exotic - Hotel in Miami during an investment raise.
2. Strangest Location - The Artic Circle, where i had to stop holidaying to close off a partnership.
3. Most Un-glamorous - Plane toilet on way to San Fransisco. Face says it all....
4. Most at home with nature - Forest, Cornwall whilst walking a dog
5. Craziest Hair - Summer 2015 I clearly needed a hairdresser.
Why not join us for the next 300?....
What if your work place enabled you to fly?
Well that's exactly what happened to our Head of Infrastructure, Aaron.
At Flubit we have a very progressive benefits system. You can read all about it here, but in short, if there's something you've always wanted to do, Flubit will help pay for it. Or... if you've not yet decided, you can subsidise your social life every month, on us!
Aaron had always dreamt of becoming a pilot, we're not sure if he was just a massive fan of Snakes on a Plane, or maybe it was Top Gun, but either way, to the air he must go.
Using Flubit's benefits system Aaron was able to claim back 100% of the cost of lessons, exams and his parachute* - so in short, Flubit allowed Aaron to fly.
"It is quite simply the most amazing thing a workplace could offer", were words we assume Aaron may have uttered, had we asked him.
*we're not 100% sure if he bought a parachute for flying.
Riverside vs Roadside, Flubit's longest standing rivalry ever, since "Upstairs vs. Downstairs" was no more... because we moved offices.
This time it was Pictionary that sent spine-tingling shivers to the organiser, Darrell, as he knew what this would mean to the winning side of the office.
Unknown to some the game was being played to prepare for an interview of a new Customer Support agent for Flubit. Customer Support is all about attention to detail, and Darrell wanted to have a random picture to test the memory skills of the interviewing candidates.
So battled commenced, and this time Riverside were victories, winning by 1 point, in the final 5 seconds of their allotted time!
The annual eCommerce football cup has been running for 5 years now... and every year Flubit have been part of it!
We play football every Wednesday lunch, some of the team talk about football every day (much to the frowns of some others)... so you'd think we'd be in good shape, right?
If you're thinking about joining Flubit, and you play football, then we need your help!
Last year we won our first match at this tournament, so we went to Wembley with high spirits.. we were the Leicester of the cup, the Iceland of the day...
Unfortunately, as it turns out, we were in fact the England. 12 games between 2 teams, 0 wins...
As founder and goalkeeper, I feel we need not write any more about this...... that said the post-match annual McDonalds tasted amazing.
What's cooler than watching Top Gear on Dave?
Yep, you've guessed it, watching Top Gear on Dave AND seeing the company you work for be advertised during the commercial break.
Starting in July 2016, Flubit began its life as an 'as seen on TV' Company, with over 2,500 adverts (that's 75+ day) being played out across national TV.
Davie, Sci-Fi, Music Channels, BT Sport... Flubit have been featured across 50 stations.
Doest TV advertising work? You betcha' not only has it helped us increase website traffic, but it's delivered an additional helping hand with creating a trustworthy brand too!
For the launch of our first advert on TV we all grouped around the very large office TV and watched the magic unfold!
BABIES! You know what they say, you wait 5 years for 1 to come along, and then 3 arrive in the space of 30 days.
Luckily at Flubit we've had the pleasure of welcoming at least 4 babies over the last few years, but until now (and without trying to make it sound any less special), we haven't had our first new Flubit Mum.
A massive congratulations to Isaura, Joanna and Zhanna who all had the most gorgeously squidgy and cute babies!
And while our new mums settle in to a life of motherhood, they were kind enough to jump on the DLR/Overground to come give our team some oooo's, ahhhhh's and the odd bit of distraction-via-crying.
A huge CONGRATS from all of us here at Flubit, and we look forward to their internships in 16 years time.
For football fans there's nothing more exciting than that bi-annual Summer feeling of your national team about to partake in an International tournament.
Unless of course that fan is English.
Luckily here at Flubit we are fortunatue to have a diverse and international team.
Fun fact, at the time of writing: Did you know that of the 24 Countries in the European Championship - we have at least one representative in the company for 14 of them? - Cheers Gillian for working that one out!
So not only did we try our hand at some sweepstakes, where for the 3rd championship in a row, founding employee Andy Stephen 'randomly' bagged the favourites (France), BUT we also turned the office into a cinema for the England vs Wales game.... here's to last minute goals.
Whilst England may have succumb to the mighty Iceland, I am very pleased congratulate our 5 Portuguese team members who were very pleased with their underserved tournament win.
Yours, a bitter Founder.
We have a very strong, intelligent and awesome set of tech teams here at Flubit, and they only continue to claim these wonderful adjectives due to their desire to continue learning.
Once a month the Tech teams 'formally' come together for the Flubit Tech Exchange; a lunchtime talk, followed by free pizza... naturally.
This Tech Exchange focussed on the Go Probgamming language. Ahmet (Core Services) and Michael (Internal Services) introduced Go to the team and it's advantages.
Michael demoed an api webserver written in Go with JWT authentication using only the standard library. Ahmet walked us through a beanstalkd client library which he had been working on the past few weekends.
According to Wikipedia, National Donut Day - started in the United States, is on the first Friday of June each year, an event initiated by The Salvation Army in 1938 to honour those of their members who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I.
That sounds like a fitting enough reason to get some Donut's into the office and take part in the day.
Flubit's Marketing team took on the initiative and on Friday we were treated to both jammy and caramel (in separate doughnuts, we must add) delights.
Photos say it all, so here's some food porn...
At the end of May 2016, right before the bank holiday, the team decided to help some kids by taking part in the @NSPCC's #BigBoardGameDay.
Throughout Friday we split into our departments to have the first ever Flubit MASSIVE Jenga knockout competition. How did it take us 5 years to have one?
With each player donating £1 to help Children who need it, extra cash was donated by teams wishing to pay to use their "Jenga Joker"... quite simply, a team-mate can hold the tower while you pull out a block... glorious cheating in the name of charity.
Flubit raised £162 on the day... which was well above our target of £130. NICE!
We must pay a massive congrats to the FINANCE team for being the ones with the most steady hands, and commiseration to Leadership & HR, who couldn't get passed round 1, despite countless cheating from co-founder Adel.
A big thanks for Rachel for arranging it internally, and the NSPCC for fighting for every child. If you want to learn more about the work of the NSPCC, please read on.
"A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapours; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a mind-bogglingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough."
- Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy...
So on May 25th, we all brought in our towels... Thanks Darrell for reminding us of the importance of our towel.
This week some of our team headed off to the Birmingham NEC for the Internet Retailing Expo (IRX). With over 6,000 European retailers and around 300 exhibitors attending, it’s a great place to see all the services available in multichannel retail. It also enables us to meet lots of new people and learn even more about the world of eCommerce.
Flubit, Flubit everywhere.
There were a great deal of interesting talks from a variety of speakers in the industry. This year Flubit were sponsoring the Marketplaces Theatre where the Flubit logo was proudly flying-high all over the theatre; you may also have noticed us on the front cover of the guide which was given out to all the attendees, oh, and finally a full-page spread reaching out to perspective merchants - yep, no one could fail to spot us in 2016.
And you heard us too...
We had two speakers over the two days, Karan on Wednesday and Roman on the Thursday, they discussed how marketplaces can help sellers reach more channels. With online retail sales in the UK growing another 12% in 2015, companies in non e-retail industries want a bigger piece of the pie. So the guys went into detail about online consumer destinations and the habits of online shoppers and how Flubit is being innovative in creating revenue opportunities with our large audience B2B channel partners. Each talk had a great turn out, everyone was engaged and stuck around egger to ask questions and meet the Flubit team.
We get to learn at Flubit.
It's really cool that we get to attend events like this with Flubit, as it really helps us develop our job roles by allowing us to meet perspective merchants, build relationships with various software solutions, and most importantly learn the skill of public speaking. The company fund all of it, and with our great benefit system we're allowed to claim 100% back off the cost of educational training, events, tools etc... even if it doesn't relate directly to our job!
Two big thumbs up!
All in all both days were a great success and after a busy two weeks of event planning and attending it's now time for a well-deserved bank holiday rest!
- Abby Orton, Flubit Merchant Team.
It's the first team day out of the year, and what better way to build team communication, spirit and togetherness than loading 8,500 rounds into attacking Zombies, to stop a potential apocalypse.
That's right, in Spring 2016, Flubit basically saved your a*se from a Zombie outbreak - you can thank us later.
Startups can be hard work, you're disrupting an industry, taking on an army of competitors, and you need to know how to think on your feet. Today the team had to decipher puzzles, learn about Zombie infections, shoot Lazer, Paintball, Air-soft, make potions, crawl through scary mazes, dodge grenades.... all in the name of fun and team bonding.
Finally we must say a massive congrats to the Spring 2016 doubles pool champions, Alex & Andy, who triumphed over Darrell and Abbey in the final. Darrell so close to becoming reigning singles and doubles champions!
Want to be at the next one? Join the team
Last week some of our team got to attend Channel Advisor’s Catalyst Connect event. This is always a great day where we get to meet lots of interesting people from the e commerce industry, which just happened to be held at the beautiful Savoy Hotel. Roman arrived early doors to set up our Flubit stand and then the rest of the guys arrived just in time for the amazing breakfast, which consisted of delicious pastries and teas and coffees. From early on our stand was busy with eager guests wanting to know more about Flubit and very quickly the registrations started flooding in from perspective merchants who wanted to start selling with us.
Then onto the very inspiring talk from the CEO of Channel Advisor David Spitz, after that we quickly made it back to our stand to meet more guests and before we knew it lunchtime was upon us and what a lunch it was, with some truly tasty sandwiches, salads and hot food, The Savoy certainly know how to keep hungry tummies happy.
As lunchtime came to a close Karan went off to present our workshop, where guests could get a better understanding of Flubit, while a few of us networked at our stand. The day then started to come to an end and it was off to the beautiful River Room for food and drinks and a final chance to network. As we entered the room Roman and John got mistaken for being part of the Jazz band which had us all in fits of laughter.
Then it was home time and after a 12 hour day we were all ready for bed, off we went buzzing from a great day of meeting new people and spreading the Flubit word!
In short, food, networking, food, workshop, food, networking, no jazz, food, Flubit!
- Abby Orton, Flubit Merchant Team.
The Department for Business Innovation & Skills, a group within the government's 'UK Trade and Investment' agency, ran a week long workshop for to promote business and educate on the advantages of the London Stock Exchange.
On one sunny morning in April Flubit were invited 'as an influential and inspiring startup' to come help open the market.
We thought we'd share a couple of sneaky snaps about what it's like inside the building with all the scrolling text!
Very coincidently, although some may also suggest it was highly planned, on the Thursday before the Easter bank holiday, the office became a chocolate treasure trove.
As we walked into the office, we noticed each desk was home to a beautiful Chocolate egg. Free chocolate for all!
Here at Flubit we're a pretty diverse bunch, so the idea of celebrating Easter is not for everyone, but if that gives us an excuse to celebrate the consumption of Chocolate, we're cool with that.
Then throughout the day it was revealed that 7 eggs were hidden around the office, cryptic clues were offered too.
Enjoy the photos of the team finding them! Maybe next tim you'll be joining the Chocolate hunt too?
March 17th 2016
Today in the office was the day we dropped our blue branding and all turned green.
Yep, that's right it's St. Patrick's day, and although we only have 1 natural-born Irish person (and woah does Gillian remind us of that day-to-day) ... we all love to be a bit green..
Some forgot their t-shirts, but hey, First Aid kits are also green, so are plants and lego boxes.... Boom!
Here's our green delight!
We’re a techy bunch here at Flubit and love nothing more than testing our endurance and building something new. We’ve enjoyed our own Flubit Hack Days before, but in March '16 the whole team got excited as 5 of our tech team – Ahmet, Tunji Michael, Danny and Dom – represented Flubit.com at the Retail Week Live Tech Sprint.
It’s a big event at the O2 and our team had to code for 24 hours straight until the judging at noon the next day.
We were selected as 1 of 7 teams by an expert panel of judges to take part. The teams – consisting of retailers, start-ups and service providers –have just 24 hours to build a solution that integrates convenient delivery into consumers’ everyday lives.
It's a time to think creatively as all teams are given the freedom to develop any innovation they want using any application program interface (API) they like, as long as the delivery part of the concept uses one of On the Dot’s APIs.
We were very happy to win 2nd place on the day, take home a trophy... and Ahmet, Tunji Michael, Danny and Dom were then very happy to get some sleep after being awake for 36 hours!!!
Every year Flubit celebrate Pancake Day for the following reasons:
1. You get to eat pancakes.
So with such strict guidelines in place as to what the day must achieve, in 2016 Flubit upped the ante.
This year a travelling duo of French chefs arrived at the office, and for two hours cooked unlimited pancakes and crepes with any flavouring under the sun. Marshmallow, Nutella, Banana, Lemon, Sugar... you name it, if it was a traditional sweet Crepe flavouring, there was a good chance it would be served!... And with that guarantee, the crowd went wild.
Everyone at Flubit enjoyed unlimited free pancakes, and when our sugar levels reached unhealthily high limits, we offered the remaining time to the rest of our building too!
Members of the Flubit team were live on Twitch.tv to stream Xbox One exclusive open-beta gameplay of the highly anticipated RPG shooter: Tom Clancy’s The Division. We were also joined by no other than Bertie Stephens, founder and CEO of Flubit.com, for a chance to ask questions! And… a massive giveaway for 5 copies of the game to lucky stream viewers in celebration of the upcoming release.
For those who missed out you can find the full stream on our twitch channel HERE.
We had a good laugh exploring post-pandemic Manhattan and blasting enemies to try bring order to the city – doesn’t sound like much of a laughing matter but I guess here at Flubit we’ve got a unique sense of humor. Bertie had a chance to answer some viewer questions about our service and give his opinions on the game. Mainly criticizing the game’s inclusion of a hand pistol when in a shootout against mobs of machine gun armed scavengers. We also played our own version of survival mode in which we each represented a random viewer from Twitch and the longest surviving player would win the viewer a free copy of the game (pretty sure a tear rolled down agbavna’s face when they we’re chosen to be represented by Bertie).
We’re really happy to have entertained over 550 viewers over the course of the stream and hope to host future gaming streams and give-aways!
One of the areas we are most proud of here at Flubit is the ability for team members to progress through the Company. Sometimes we have people move up in their current role, sometimes we see sidewise shifts where team members discover an interest and skill in an area they would have never thought of, prior to starting at Flubit.
Since 2014 Flubit also started to help new workers find their passion by engaging in a number of different apprentices schemes.
As of the time of writing, from 6 apprentices we've had 4 graduate to full time roles, which we're really happy about. It's incredibly impressive to see the dedication to the work and team bonding!
In March 2016 Dave and Riswanna had their graduation ceremony, and we wanted to show off their success! It was really nice to see fellow team members Carla, Alex, Gabriel, Michael and Andy go to the graduation to support them too!
Well done both of you!
We’re delighted to have won Corporate LiveWire’s 2016 Innovation & Excellence Award for the Most Innovative eCommerce Start-up – UK.
The Innovation & Excellence Awards give recognition to businesses that are transforming their respective industries and the standard-bearers of excellence by continually setting industry trends as well as showing significant advances in terms of innovation and improvement.
Flubit.com was selected as the Most Innovative eCommerce Start-up, and we couldn’t be happier to accept the award and recognition we have received for our disruptive approach to the eCommerce industry.
Bertie Stephens, Flubit.com CEO, said: “We were honoured to be shortlisted for the Innovation & Excellence Awards. To have won is even more amazing! We know that we were up against some real strong businesses doing some incredible things, so it really is a great achievement for us. Our focus now is on getting better prices for UK online shoppers, and giving online retail merchants a solution that helps them increase sales and grow their business without sacrificing their margin to greedy marketplace commissions.”
We love our team here at Flubit. Our team makes us laugh, helps us when we're stressed, and builds confidence in our ability.
Oh.. and the team make all the cool stuff we do on this Flubit Life site feel so cool.
But from time to time, for a variety of reasons we say goodbye to team members, and when we do, we want to thank them for all their hard work.
So to show off this, here's a number of team members deciding to go to the pub and drink and say goodbye...!
p.s - High Quality photos inside a dark pub is tough!!
As a fast growing start-up one of the biggest 'things' you always read about it is 'growing pains'.
As teams grow, as technology exponentially scales itself, there's a lot of code, internal services, and tech that people need to know exist. You can reach a point where there's a chance one developer may spend weeks building a piece of technology, not knowing it already exists within the company.
So, every so often we have an internal Tech Exchange to make sure all our tech teams know whats-what, what's available internally, and how it all connects up.
The great part about these days is that a lot of new ideas flow, and innovation gets a refueling!
Here at Flubit.com, we’ve got a trophy cabinet we’re very proud of (OK they’re more certificates than actual trophies, and it’s more of a shelf than a cabinet but you know what we mean.)
We’ve picked up an award or 2 in our time – the Most Innovative eCommerce Start-up Award,The People’s Champion award, Retail Company of the Year and The National Business Award– and have been shortlisted among some truly incredible names, and we’re delighted to have had our hard work and achievements recognised within our industry. It’s rewarding for our whole team and we usually have a little celebration for each award we win.
But this next one is an achievement we couldn’t have imagined. Along with J.K. Rowling and Prince Harry, Flubit.com‘s co-founders Bertie Stephens and Adel Louertatani were included in The Sunday Times Britain’s 500 most influential.
Every year The Sunday Times are known for releasing the most 500 influential people in Britain – it’s a big thing. Like always, this year some big names feature in it. Prince Harry, J.K. Rowling, Sir Elton John, Kate Middleton, Tim Peak, Lewis Hamilton, Adele, David Walliams, Tim Berners–Lee, Benedict Cumberbatch, etc etc… Flubit are in the top 500 most influential in the country, along with those massive names!
This really is an amazing achievement for the whole Flubit team – that a company only a few years ago was an idea and a couple of guys trying to make it happen has no grown to the point where it’s creators are being recognised as some of the most influential people in the whole country is amazing.
Bertie Stephens said: “This is huge for us. I like to believe the reason we’re successful is because as a team we keep delivering. Whether it’s by driving more sales to Flubit.com, or by creating the countries largest B2B platform for products. I am a strong believer in celebrating success delivered by an awesome team. Congratulations to my co-founder Adel Louertatani, the Flubit team, and our investors who supported us here.”
Blue Monday, the third Monday in January, is supposedly the most depressing day of the year.
Although commonly dismissed as nonsensical pseudoscience, psychologists in 2005 actually created a scientific formula to prove it’s actuality.
[W+(D-d)]xTQ/MxNA where W is weather, D is debt, d monthly salary, T time since Christmas, Q time since failure of attempt to give something up, M low motivational level and NA the need to take action.
In short, it means that Christmas is long gone, taking with it it’s delicious food and merry making, and the cold hard reality of real life has sunken in. And we are down in the dumps, particularly on this deary Monday.
But here at Flubit, blue is the colour of our logo, we’re happy and proud to be blue, so we celebrated Blue Monday with pizzas (around 30 of them!) and enjoyed a team lunch – munching on pizza’s whilst battling it out on FIFA 16 and Ping pong (that counts as exercise right?!)
This year, Dom wins the annual tradition of coming to work in PJs or Comfy clothes the day after the Xmas party.
I didn't think my elf shoes were so bad however.
mmmm Chocolate. An advent calander on everyones desk, to take us through the busy eCommerce December period.
How do you do better than a medieval banquet? Well it's tough, but we think this year we just about managed it!
This year for our Xmas party, in addition to our Secret Santa, we took the team out on our own private boat.
We boarded at Tower Hill, looking out on the Tower of London, and flew up and down the Thames, feasting on a 3 course meal, before partying the night away, passing all the main London attractions.
Why don't you join Flubit for 2016, and be part of Life @ Flubit?
Back in 2013, the Flubit team went Ice Skating, we decided to go again this year.
It's fair to say we may have got a little better! Great fun.
We're ending 2015 with a really cool award, especially as it's voted by the general public!
I have no idea what happened to my hair... (i'm on the left)
Our winter day out this year took us to Oxygen trampoline park.
If you've never been on a trampoline, then imagine the fun you would have, and multiple it by 1,000.
Hundreds of trampolines, all for us. We hired out the entire park, just for Flubit and went flying!
Exhausting, but amazing!
We've never had team Flubit t-shirts or clothing, I've no idea why - i'm surprised it wasn't the first thing we got for everyone.
But that all changed in November 2015.
Introducing the new Flubit Hoodies. We took them bowling to celebrate. (Feel free to notice my incredible bowling score, pictured)
This year for Halloween we went all out spooky!
The entire office was made up in full ghost attire, and then on our weekly demo day we played halloween themed games.
Have you have played "PaperBatplane" races? No? Well join the Flubit team and maybe you will next year!
Just some more Flubit Ads on the tube...
There wasn't a dry eye after 10 minutes...
For those that can't be bothered to cook lunch, or go out for lunch, we now get lunch into the office, which is nice.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to fly? Yes? Then bubble football is nothing like that.
In bubble football you get inside an inflatable plastic ball, where luckily you can still breath.
Then you bounce, and hit, and roll, and tumble and go head over heel.
It's one of the craziest things we've ever done as a team, but so, so much fun!
These are full page adverts for Barclays in the paper. But behind these adverts lie our white labelled service.
So in theory, we're in the paper, full page! #Awesome.
We’ve just had such a fun day! We took the team to Thorpe Park (a theme park just outside London).
It was a whole day event and we travelled out of London Waterloo in the early hours of the morning, and arrived at Thorpe Park for the opening.
But we had a special day planned…
In the morning we were split into teams and made to run around the park collecting clues and returning video clips on a mobile GPS system. The winning team would be the one who covered the most ground at Thorpe Park, and answered the most questions.
Then in the afternoon we were let lose on the rides!
Why not come join Flubit and be part of this team?
We have an amazing office that looks out on the Thames. We have a deck which takes in all the sun, so there's nothing more fitting than having a BBQ for the Flubit team...
We brought in our own chefs for the afternoon, and had exclusive access to the area.
Last Summer we took part in the the Olympic Run (not the official name).
Sadly last Summer the 2012 Olympic stadium was being renovated so we couldn't finish inside the stadium. In 2015 that all changed.
What an amazing experience, running with the Flubit team, we ran through the entrance of the stadium and around the track and finished down the 100m track.
Congratulations to all those at Team Flubit who took part for completing another 10k.
We had so much fun at the end of last year baking and caking and making (and faking), that we decided to do it all again.
Pictures tell the whole yummy story!
I can't sing, so it's very lucky this event took place when i was out of the country on a business trip.
But I am very good at collecting photos from people.
The team took it upon themselves to to go out to the local Karaoke bar/pub and let their voices be heard around Wapping.
From what I understand, we're very lucky only to have photos here... that said, it looked like it was great fun!
Just another big Flubit feature!
Every year at Flubit we take part in the annual eCommerce football tournament. Every week in-between we train, and every time we compete we lose.
BUT THIS YEAR - Even newer strips than last year, THREE teams and much more chance of winning!
And we did! We won a game! We won a game of competitive football!
We didn't progress past the group stages, but it really doesn't matter, we are so much better than last year!
Are you a developer? do you love to code? Do you love technology? Come join our team, and be part of a team that's continually learning.
We've decided to make the team days out a more regular occurrence, to treat the team for all their wonderful and hard work.
Today's activity needs very little explaining, aside from the fact that WE ALL WENT GO KARTING!
Everyone got involved, and John even managed to wear the bright pink boiler suit!
A fantastic afternoon with the team, can't wait for the next day out!
In addition to the Tech Talks that were started by our Dev teams when we moved to the Wapping offices, we wanted to enable them to have the freedom to try out new things, despite the pressure of our pipelines.
For that reason we took a 48 hour window and had a Hackathon.
The Hackathon allowed our tech teams to explore new technologies, ways of working, and join with team members they wouldn't normally get to work with.
It was a huge success and I hope this won't be our last Hackathon!
When you have a big TV (or 2) - what more can you do on a Wednesday evening with a few games of Fifa, and an awesome team?
This is so so so cool (if you live in the retail/eCommerce bubble)
IRX is regarded as one of the most highly rated annual retail conferences. We've been going since 2011 to make sure we know what's going on in the industry.
This year year the main show guide sponsor!
Flubtit's name is in front of thousands of industry professionals.
We run an eCommerce office, we sometimes get great deals on products... and sometimes we get customer returns and write offs.
That's what has happened here with our fantastic new TV.
The customer didn't want it (and got a refund), the merchant didn't want it (and got their money back)... so we had a massive 4K TV spare. One Xbox later and we have ourselves an entertainment system.
Time to go green. Becuase we're all Irish in someway.
Go back in time and see other cool stuff we've been up to as a team at Flubit:
Want to join us for the ride? Why not check out our vacancies.
